Fungal nail infections (Onychomycosis) are a common condition that can affect one or more toenails, causing them to become thickened, discoloured, brittle, or crumbly. The infection occurs when fungal organisms (usually dermatophytes, yeasts, or moulds) invade the nail plate and nail bed.
While fungal nails are not usually painful in the early stages, they can become uncomfortable over time and may make walking or wearing shoes difficult. They can also spread to other nails or skin if left untreated.
Fungal nail infections often develop after Athlete’s Foot, from exposure to warm, moist environments (such as communal showers or swimming pools), or due to nail trauma. You may also be more susceptible if you have diabetes, circulation issues, or a weakened immune system.
